Summary
This report locates Underground Railroad sites in southwestern Indiana. No standing structures relevant to thetimes appear on the sites covered in this report. This is mostly due to the fact that in most cases rural routes to escper were taken through southwestern Indiana, and the fact that rural people often lived in log structures during the time period covered by this report. Personal record-keeping and other documentation were rare to non-existent for the obvious reason that such activities were illegal and thus performed with the greatest secrecy, presenting its own unique challenges. The memoirs of William Cockrum, son of James Cockrum, resident of Oakland CIty is an important source, particularly his publication of the The Underground Railroad, published in 1915. Also referenced is History of Gibson County, Indiana, by Gil R. Stormont of Princeton, Indiana. Additional sources are documented in this report as well.
