When the Nazis storm into Paris in 1940, Nicole Cassin is a carefree student living above her parents’ art gallery. She hires an art historian to try and find the paintings the Germans stole, especially a portrait of her mother by Henri Matisse, and in doing so has to confront memories long buried—including the one she fears most.
